Baan Unrak - A Sanctuary for destitute women & children
Baan Unrak means "House of Happiness" and is a home and community development project for orphans and destitute women at Sangkhlaburi in north-western Thailand near the Myanmar border.
The home was started in 1991 by Donata Dolci, an Italian volunteer working with the Neo Humanist Foundation, in response to the number of orphans and abandoned mothers with young children in the area who may fall prey to unscrupulous people.
Starting out with just two children in 1991, there are about seventy today, ranging in age from 2 -16. The main objective of Baan Unrak is to help women and children in need. In addition to a kindergarten, Baan Unrak runs an informal education programme open to children in the community, due to the severe shortage of government schools in the area. Other programmes run at Baan Unrak include:
- a Sewing and Weaving Centre
- a Shampoo business
- an outreach programme for abandoned mothers and children
